Love and Nationalism with Traditional Dances

Bireun Seudati proudly presents Gala Budaya Nusantara 2012 "Amazing Indonesia, Beyond Differences" with traditional dances as main concern at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta (17/7). The beauty and diversity of Indonesia culture to all the young people. So the love and nationalism toward their people continues to grow.

SAMAN DANCE

Aceh's Saman dance has been officially included in UNESCO's intangible world cultural heritage list on November 2011. "Saman" the most popular dance in Aceh and the dance that has become well-known abroad with the name "Thousand hands". It has its origin from the Alas ethnic group from Gayo plateau central Aceh and is normally performed to celebrate the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad and other important occasions. It's an energetic, dynamic and require excellent coordination among its players.
The movements are intense and powerful because, those movements also formed the rhythm for the dance. Because beside the sound of claps, chest slapping or hand hitting the floor there's only one person reading a narrative in Acehnese tone.  If it's not powerful then nobody will hear anything and if it's out of control, not only it will ruin the rhythm but somebody may get hurt. However, those are the charm of this dance. It's dynamic and excellent coordination. 
The Saman dance is originally from Gayo Lues and environs in Aceh Province. It was created by a Gayo tribe in the 13th century and later developed by Syeh Saman to convey religious messages.




RAMPAI KIPAS DANCE

This dance originated from Lampung. This dance is youth dance depicting the beauty, the similarity of motion as well as firmness. Accompanied by a cheerful musical accompaniment and energic colour firmness and agility of motion.




ZAPIN DANCE

Zapin is a dance form that is popular in Indonesia [especially in Malay - populated provinces in Sumatera ( Riau Province, Jambi Province, Riau Islands Province, North Sumatera, and Bangka-Belitung Islands) and West Kalimantan ] It is believed to have been introduced by Arab, Muslim missionaries from the Middle East in the fourteenth century. In the old days, only males were allowed to perform, nowadays, female dancers are included.
It used to be performed exclusively for religious ceremonies but through the years it has become a form of traditional entertainment, hence the participation of female dancers is allowed. The dancers usually perform in pairs and are accompanied by a traditional music ensemble which normally consists of the gambus, accordion, rehab, marwas (bongos), rebana (drum) and dok.





GANDRUNG BALI DANCE

The Gandrung Bali dance is a ritual dance that initially came into being to express devotion to the goddess of fertility and rice, Dewi Sri. A beautiful, classical dance, it has evolved over time to become a sort of courtship dance that portrays a girl looking for a man. In Balinese, the word Gandrung stands for desperately in love or being infatuated, where it is performed at social events, weddings, or to engage tourists.
Over the years, the Gandrung lost its ritual connection with the goddess Dewi Sri and is now sometimes performed as a courtship dance outdoors in certain parts of Bali. Originally, the instruments musicians used were violins, gongs, drums, and kenong. Over time, they added others such as bonang, gamelan, and xylophones.






LENGGANG KEMBANG DANCE

Lenggang Kembang is a new creation dance originated from DKI Jakarta. The music include a set of traditional instruments called Gambang Kromong. It expresses the happiness and freedom of a woman (kembang) in making a choice in her life according to her womanhood. They use a different colour of costumes and fan to describe about the colourful live and expressing a beautiful live. This dance also inspired by various culture.




PLATE DANCE

Plate dance (Minangkabau: Dancing Piriang) is a property of the art dance originating from the Minangkabau of West Sumatra. This dance has a movement that resembles the movement of the farmers during the planting 'bercucuk', create employment and so reap.
Dance is also the feeling of joy and gratitude with the results of their plants. Dance is a jig with the dancers holding the plate in the palm of their hands, accompanied with songs played by talempong and saluang.




INDANG DANCE

Indang Dance is a dance from Minangkabau culture, West Sumatera, Indonesia. This dance is performed by sitting. Indang Dance was established by observing how fishermen cast their net and how rice is winnowed. Indang dance is a tambourine dance.
The word Indang describes a little tambourine used as a musical instrument in this dance. The dancers dance in the sitting position for most of duration of the dance and do not change places. This traditional dance originally comes from West Sumatra.
